The Road Warriors 2018 USA Graffiti Road Trip

The Road Warriors 2018 marks the beginning of a long-term artistic travel project based on graffiti, collaboration and movement across the United States. The idea was simple: use travel as a framework for creation, and transform each stop into an opportunity to paint and exchange with local artists.

Covering approximately 6000 miles, the journey connected seven cities with very different cultural and urban identities. Each location offered a distinct environment for graffiti production, shaped by local scenes, architecture and social context.

The project included stops in El Paso, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Pueblo and Austin. These cities represent a wide spectrum of American urban landscapes, from dense metropolitan areas to more industrial or regional environments.

In El Paso, the proximity to the border adds a specific cultural and geographical dimension to the urban landscape. In Las Vegas, the overwhelming visual environment of signage and artificial light creates a unique context for graffiti intervention. Los Angeles and San Francisco both offer deeply rooted street art cultures, with long histories of muralism and graffiti practice.

Denver and Pueblo introduce a different rhythm, with more industrial and transitional urban spaces. Austin, known for its creative and musical scene, provides a strong cultural environment for artistic exchange and experimentation.

Throughout the journey, painting remained the central activity, but the project was equally focused on encounters. Meeting local artists and exchanging ideas was an essential part of the experience. Each collaboration contributed to shaping the visual outcome of the trip.

Graffiti travel projects like The Road Warriors are rooted in the tradition of movement within hip-hop culture. Since its origins, graffiti has been connected to trains, highways and constant displacement. This mobility allows artists to discover new techniques, styles and communities.

The 2018 edition established the foundation for later versions of the project, including the 2019 West Coast trip and the 2023 East Coast journey. Each iteration expanded the scope of the experience, reinforcing the idea of continuous travel as an artistic method.

The works created during this journey are not isolated pieces but part of a broader narrative. They document a specific moment in time, shaped by travel conditions, human interactions and the energy of each city visited.

Beyond painting walls, the experience also functioned as a form of visual research. Observing how graffiti exists in different urban contexts helped refine an artistic approach centered on adaptation, collaboration and responsiveness to space.

The Road Warriors 2018 remains a foundational project in this series, marking the starting point of a multi-year exploration of graffiti culture across the United States. It connects travel, artistic production and community engagement into a single continuous process.
