15e Festival “GRAPHISME DANS LA RUE” Street-based graphic design / Intervention carried out with Poétiquement Correct in Fontenay-sous-Bois in 2007

Following a discussion about illiteracy with a representative from the local urban policy department, we wanted to explore the legibility of typographic signs. We aimed to place the viewer in a position similar to that of an illiterate person by rendering a sequence of characters indecipherable. The park square near the Fontenay administrative complex seemed like the ideal location for our intervention; its structure could serve as a framework for attaching strips of cellophane. The cellophane became the medium for a message, with its reading flow disrupted. Viewed from outside the pavilion, the typography appears deconstructed; words intertwine to form new, hybrid characters. A play on words, language, and characters emerges. The viewer is unable to read the message; the only way to decipher it is to step inside the structure and read: “You have to go inside to see outside.”

The CelloGraff concept originated in 2006 while Kanos was at fine arts school; he later developed the idea further starting in 2009, adapting it for the graffiti context.
