Ecorchure Vectorielle (2007–2008) – Acrylic Painting Series

“Ecorchure Vectorielle” is a series of acrylic paintings created by Alex Kanos between 2007 and 2008 when i was still at fine arts school . This body of work explores the intersection between graphic vector language and physical materiality through traditional painting techniques.

Unlike purely digital works, these pieces are executed in acrylic and spray on small siez canvases, where structured geometric forms inspired by vector aesthetics are combined with textured surfaces and material effects. This contrast between clean graphic construction and tactile matter creates a tension between digital logic and physical presence, between pixels and brush paint.

The series reflects an early phase of experimentation in my own artist practice, where visual systems borrowed from graphic design and vector illustration are translated into hand-painted compositions. The result is a hybrid visual language situated between abstraction, design and expressive gesture.

Very influenced by graffiti and hip-hop culture i mix it with some history of art elements i learn at school, for exemple “you ll be illin” is a direct reference to Run DMC, or a portrait of Jim Jarmush, and David Hockney reference.

Some works in the series lean more toward precise geometric structures, while others emphasize surface, texture and painterly disruption. This variation highlights a central theme: the instability between controlled systems and organic transformation.

“Ecorchure Vectorielle” forms part of the foundational research that will later inform larger explorations of organic/mechanical fusion in murals and contemporary visual projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ecorchure Vectorielle?
It is a series of acrylic paintings created by Alex Kanos between 2007 and 2008, combining vector-inspired graphic language with physical painting techniques.

What techniques were used in this series?
The works are created using acrylic paint on canvas, mixing geometric structures with textured and material effects.

What is the main concept of the series?
The series explores the tension between digital-like vector precision and traditional painterly materiality.

Is this a digital artwork series?
No. These are physical acrylic paintings, although some compositions are inspired by vector graphics and digital visual language.

How does this series relate to the artist’s later work?
It represents an early experimental phase that informed later developments in organic-mechanical fusion and large-scale mural practice.
